7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Accounting Firm
Choosing who looks after your books is an important decision. These questions help you find a good fit.

Handing over your accounting means trusting someone with the records your business depends on. It's worth taking a little time to find the right fit, rather than choosing on price or convenience alone.
These seven questions help you understand what you'd actually be getting, and whether it suits how you work.
1. Exactly what will you handle for me?
Ask for a clear list: bookkeeping, GST records, payroll, tax-related documentation, or some combination. Vague promises lead to gaps, where each side assumes the other is doing something that nobody is.
2. What is outside your scope?
Just as important is what they don't do. Some services, such as statutory audits or certain certifications, can only be provided by specific qualified professionals. A good firm is upfront about its limits and will say plainly what it doesn't offer.
3. Who will I actually be dealing with?
Find out whether you'll have a consistent point of contact who learns your business, or whether your work passes between people. Continuity makes a real difference to quality and to how much you need to re-explain.
4. How will we communicate, and how quickly?
Ask how they'll keep you informed and how long a typical response takes. Reliable, timely answers matter most when a deadline is close.
5. What do you need from me, and when?
Good accounting is a partnership. Understanding what documents and information you'll need to provide, and by when, avoids frustration on both sides.
6. How are your fees structured?
Ask what's included, what's extra and how changes in your workload would affect cost. Clear, straightforward pricing is a good sign of how the relationship will go.
7. Do you understand businesses like mine?
A trader, a service business and a startup have different accounting needs. Ask about their experience with businesses of your type and size, and how they'd tailor the support to yours.
