How to Read a Simple Monthly Financial Summary
You don't need a finance background to get value from your numbers. Here are the few things worth looking at each month.

Many business owners receive a monthly summary of their numbers and then barely look at it. Not because they don't care, but because it isn't obvious what to look for.
You don't need a finance background. A handful of questions, asked consistently every month, is enough to turn a page of figures into something useful.
1. What came in?
Start with income: how much the business earned this month, and how that compares with last month. Look for what's changed, such as a new customer, a lost one or a seasonal dip, rather than just the total.
2. What went out?
Look at expenses by category. Which costs are rising? Is anything there that you don't recognize? Surprises in this section are often the first sign of a slow leak, such as a subscription you no longer use.
3. What's left over?
Compare income with expenses to see what the business actually earned. A single month can be unusual, so watch the trend across several months before drawing conclusions.
4. Who owes you money?
Check the list of unpaid customer invoices and how long each has been outstanding. Late payments tie up cash, and they're much easier to follow up while they're recent.
5. What do you owe, and when?
Note upcoming payments to suppliers and for regular obligations. Seeing them a few weeks ahead means they never arrive as a surprise.
Make it a routine
Fifteen minutes at the same time every month is enough. Over time, you'll start to spot patterns on your own, and your records will have turned from paperwork into a tool for running the business.
